Before surgery:
You’ll need to clarify with your doctor whether you’ll be undergoing local or general anaesthesia for your eyelid surgery. You may require general anaesthesia if the blepharoplasty is more complicated or if you plan to undergo other cosmetic procedures at the same time.
You should stock up on ice packs before leaving for the surgery as you will need to use them to reduce swelling during recovery.
If you are a smoker, your surgeon may advise you to quit smoking for at least several weeks prior to a procedure, because smoking is associated with an increased risk of surgical complications and slower healing.
Operation:
- During surgery, incisions are made in the natural folds of the eyelid, in the crease of the upper eyelid and just beneath the lashes or behind the lower eyelid. Excess skin and in some cases, fat pads are removed and muscles are tightened.
- The incision is closed.
- The sutures are removed according to the surgeon’s recommendation, usually 3-7 days post-surgery.
The final result will be revealed after 6 months. If the surgery is performed under local anesthesia, the patient can leave the clinic a few hours after surgery. Bruising and swelling generally subside in 14 days. The patient can not lift heavy objects during this period.
Taking a bath or visiting a sauna should be avoided until full recovery. The results will last up to 7-10 years, depending on the patient’s lifestyle. Drinking alcohol, smoking or working nights will considerably shorten the length of the effects of eyelid surgery.
Recovery:
- It’s important to follow the surgeon’s instructions post-surgery. Stock up on ice packs and pain medicine beforehand.
- Surgery on upper and lower eyelids can be performed during one procedure or done separately.
- Risks include infection, bleeding, visible scarring and dry, irritated eyes.
Most people who undergo eyelid surgery report satisfaction and improved self image. Depending on the patient’s lifestyle, the results can last up to 7-10 years. In some cases, as ageing continues, drooping eyelids may recur. Continuing daily sun protection and a healthy lifestyle will help extend the results of your procedure.
